Ugly Betty” remains in vogue at ABC.
The network Thursday renewed the Thursday night dramedy as part of a mass pickup of a dozen staples of the ABC schedule. Also greenlit for the 2009-10 season: “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” “The Bachelor,” “Brothers & Sisters,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost,” “Private Practice,” “Supernanny” and “Wife Swap.”
Missing from the list: Comedy “Samantha Who?,” a favorite of ABC executives that nonetheless has struggled when not behind “Dancing With the Stars.” The network also, not surprisingly, is withholding judgment on renewals for its new midseason series.
None of the renewals came as a complete surprise, including “Betty.”
While the show has lost nearly 20% of its adult 18-49 audience this season—it’s averaging a 2.6 in the demographic—it hails from ABC Studios and is one season away from having enough episodes for syndication. ABC also hasn’t had much luck launching new hits this spring, making “Betty’s” decent Thursday performance all the more attractive.
The greenlight for “Private Practice” also marks a victory of sorts for ABC programming executives. The show got off to a shaky creative start and struggled a bit on Wednesdays. It has done better, however, since it was relocated behind the “Grey’s” mothership on Thursdays.
ABC is tied with NBC for third place season-to-date among adults 18-49, but it boasts four of the top 10 shows in that demographic.
