October 30, 2007 CBS Soaps In Depth
Karen giving Lily a hat that once belonged to Dru (which she coincidentally picked up at a thrift store) scored some major points with not only Neil's daughter but with Neil himself! But is the widower truly ready to open his heart to another woman--even one as caring as Karen?
"The fact remains that Neil has not yet recovered from Dru's loss," Kristoff St. John (Neil) shares with In Depth. "That's evidenced by the fact that every time he gets around a pretty girl like Karen, he talks about his dead wife." Something women just love to hear, right? "Well, maybe," St. John theorizes, "he's playing the sympathy card? I think he's still lost in confusion, sorrow and despair."
Fortunately, the recovering alcoholic hasn't fallen off of the wagon--and that makes Neil ready to be in a more healthy relationship. "He's more or less cleaned up his act," notes St. John. "So what lies ahead? Karen..."
It's unclear whether Karen will be paired on a long-term basis with the widower, but one territory of Dru's that Karen has moved in on is Dru's job. "I asked what Dru did... and [they said] something in Newman Enterprises," shares Nia Peeples (Karen). "She's got her hand in everything."
The actress feels that Karen and Neil share similar backgrounds. "I'm guessing [Karen] is highly educated [and even] may have a law degree," offers Peeples. "They've been developing who Karen is along the way."
As for Neil and Karen's romantic future, Peeples says, "[The writers] keep us in the dark so we can't tell anyone, [but] they are testing the romantic waters with us." Could Karen ever hope to fill the void left in Neil's life by Dru? "The whole soap opera world is a brand new one for me," Peeples notes. "What I'm learning is that the fans are so incredibly loyal to characters that when you start making changes [like possibly pairing Neil and Karen romantically], you really have to do it at a pace that [the viewers] are keen on."
Will Karen Replace Dru?
Y&R's Neil has been a widower for less than a year, but his romance with PR whiz Karen is continuing to heat up. Might Neil be ready to start living life after Dru?
