Last week, J.T., who has been working undercover at the Clear Springs construction site, suspected that substandard concrete was being used. While he investigated a sneaky foreman, the grand scale development (which includes Nikki's NVP spa, Jack's casino and a posh shopping center) was preparing to open. As those with vested interests arrive at Clear Springs for different reasons, J.T. discovers a suspicious crack in the foundation of the vast underground parking structure. But before he can alert anyone, the subterranean levels collapse! "From the day we started Clear Springs," we planned to have this catastrophe," says Executive Producer/Head Writer Lynn Marie Latham. "It's not going to be clear who's trapped. Each day the audience will learn who didn't make it out in time."
Rubble and Trouble
Cane and Katherine have come to Clear Springs because of construction concerns. But when they meet up with J.T. in the parking structure, everything falls down around them. The trio survives, and Cane's first priority is helping his grandmother. "She's older, the air quality isn't good and there's the possibility of further collapse," explains Daniel Goddard (Cane). "It's about getting Kay to safety."
The good news: The guys work well together. "He and J.T. do their best to get the situation under control," says Goddard. "I don't think Cane is a person who panics under pressure. He logically assesses the environment and takes steps on how to deal with it accordingly. J.T. and Kay are the same way."
However, Cane feels he could've prevented such a horrific accident. "There's the possibility that he may have been responsible for it because he was in charge of building the structure," Goddard points out. "So, he's horrified. He's like, 'Oh, my God, I'm responsible.' But then he needs to deal with a cool, calm head so he can get out of this."
Cane and J.T. then devise a dangerous plan to save Kay--unaware that they are not alone.
Risky Business
After the collapse, Nick is trapped with his ex-wife, Sharon, and her husband, Jack, which makes for an extremely uncomfortable situation, both physically and emotionally. "Jack and Nick are really at odds with each other when this happens," sums up Peter Bergman (Jack). "Even below ground, they disagree on just about everything, including how to get out of there. It's ugly for Sharon to be in the middle of it all. They're left with a couple of really ugly choices that bring to a head the relationship that Nick and Jack have."
Jack is also unnerved to be involved in yet another public scandal. "This is Jack's casino," says Bergman. "This is something he shares with Nikki's NVP group; it's built by Katherine Chancellor's company, but Jack definitely has a stake in all of this. It's in the back of his mind the whole time. He's thinking, 'Are my people responsible?' A parking structure he helped build may kill the person he loves most. It's definitely something he's concerned about. It's a tough position to be in."
Though he attempts to keep it together, the situation begins to get the best of Jack. "This is bigger than big," notes the actor. "Jack's dealt with crises before, like Phyllis giving birth in the elevator, but any minute the rest of the thing is going to fall in, so it's crazy. Lives are lost."
Despite the animosity between Jack and Nick, they are forced to make a decision that will result in two of the trio being freed and one of them being left behind to fight for survival. "Let's just say the fallout from this could be considerable," marvels Bergman. "It changes a number of relationships."
Love Among the Ruins?
Since Fenmore's is the major department store in the Clear Springs mall, Lauren is checking on the security system. "Paul is helping her do the walk-through," explains Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren). "Michael was supposed to go with her, but he gets called away at the last minute, and Paul asks Maggie to come, too."
And there's another tagalong. "Nick asks if Lauren can watch Noah for a little bit," adds Bregman. "Noah is very disgruntled about it, but Paul and Lauren remember that when they were married they used to go fishing up in Clear Springs, so they decide to take Noah on a fishing trip and drag along Maggie."
Oops. Paul and Lauren's past marriage is news to the lady cop. "I think it's Lauren's little way of showing Maggie how compatible she and Paul used to be," chuckles Bregman.
Before they can head out, the group must enter the parking structure, where minutes later, they're trapped. "Everyone is basically okay except Noah," says Bregman. "They figure out that he has internal injuries. All they can do for now is keep him calm, but Lauren starts to freak out."
Since Lauren has been buried in a grave, imprisoned in a fallout shelter and also suffered crippling anxiety attacks after Fen was born, she definitely has trouble keeping it together. "She gets claustrophobic and starts to panic," sighs Bregman. "It hits her, too, that Paul has always been her rescuer, but he's trapped with her, so it doesn't bring any peace."
While Maggie tends to Noah, Paul does his best to calm Lauren. "That's when you see the true connection between them," says Bregman. "There's a possibility that they're going to die and then you see how she really feels about him. Maggie can't avoid noticing that connection."
Meanwhile, confusion and anxiety reign above ground as everyone is trying to figure out who is trapped below. While rescue workers begin to dig for survivors, it starts to become clearer who is not accounted for. "Victor and Nikki are in such horrendous conflict right now, but when tragedy like this strikes, they put that all aside," says Latham.
As Michael worries about Lauren and Jill is frantic over Katherine and Cane, expect plenty of drama to unfold. "People have to pull together who normally aren't allies," explains Latham. "There will be bravery and sacrifice."
But another threat, bigger than the structural cave-in, looms on the horizon.
