It's not exactly a news flash to say that parents and their children are not always on the same page. Certainly Peter Bergman (Jack) got a chuckle over the generation gap when he tried helping daughter Clare prepare for higher education by offering advice on the topic she should tackle for her college-entrance essay. "She loves basketball," says the proud dad. "And to look at her, you wouldn't think she'd be a starter on the team because she's not that tall or anything. But she never missed a practice, would get up early to go. And she always started, was even the team captain." After offering her that suggestion, the dad took a walk and found himself choking up while reflecting on those memories. "I don't think I was crying, but when I went inside, Clare took one look at my face and was like, 'What's wrong?!' I told her I'd been thinking about her writing about her love of basketball for the college essay. She just shrugged and said, 'Oh, I decided not to do that,' " he recalls with a laugh. "It was so blasé! Here I was getting all emotional about this, and she had already dismissed it!"
