March 17, 2008 CBS Soaps In Depth History's Mysteries Nia Peeples admits that she's not exactly clear on who her alter ego, Karen, is at this point. However, as much as she's eager to define the singing exec for Y&R viewers, the showbiz vet is also cautious about locking the character into a past that can't be undone. "The past is an important part of what the present is for a character. Sometimes writers will try to squeeze in what the past was, but until they've decided who this person really is, I usually cross that off," she shares. In fact, Peeples remembers a scene she nixed because she felt it would have forced her character into a corner. "They wanted me to say something like, 'Back in the day, my mom was a black nurse when black women only cleaned hotels.' I thought, a: I'm not black; and b: I don't want to get stuck in a storyline I know nothing about," she says. "Until I understand a little bit more about the possibilities of who Karen is, I don't want to create the past. It's too strong an aspect of the present and the future."
