Dead And Lovin' It
We'll admit right up front that we weren't thrilled to learn of Y&R's plan to kill another legacy character by having Colleen drown in the same lake in which her father had died. But the dramatic aftermath of these events has given the show the kind of gut-wrenching, emotion-based drama that so often is lacking in today's soaps. Always the king of playing story beats, Y&R had us suffer right along with the Abbott clan as they dealt with the stunning blow. We felt Jack's anger at the irony of Victor's survival, and our tears were matched by those streaming down the face of Colleen's mom, Traci (the phenomenal Beth Maitland). Perhaps most shocking of all is the fact that Y&R managed to turn obviously-disturbed Patty into a wildly sympathetic character even as we watched the consequences of her actions unfold. While too many other shows (are you listening, ATWT?) rely on fast-moving storylines involving psychos we don't care about, Y&R is proving yet again that when it comes to great drama, slow and steady wins the (ratings) race.
