The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Award Nominations:
HBO Leads; Record Recognition for AMC
Here is a quick summary of The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations, which were announced yesterday morning. As expected, HBO led the number of nominations for The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, with 86. ABC was second overall (and first among the broadcast networks) with 70, followed by NBC (69), CBS (44), Fox (28) and PBS, with 24. Sixteen nominations for miniseries Broken Trail ignited cable net ABC to a record 18 nominations, followed by Showtime (17), Discovery Channel (16), Comedy Central and USA (12 each) and TNT (11). Sci Fi Channel, The History Channel and commercials (with no network affiliations) netted seven nods each. New network the CW, meanwhile, managed to make the cut with one nomination.
HBO original movie Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee was the most recognized of any single series, with 17, followed by AMC's aforementioned Broken Trail (16), the final season of HBO's The Sopranos (15), ABC's Ugly Betty (11) -- the most nominated new series -- and 10 each for ABC's Grey's Anatomy, USA miniseries The Starter Wife, and freshman NBC sitcom 30 Rock. Also of note were nine nominations each for The 79th Annual Academy Awards on ABC (which always seems odd when an awards show is nominated for an Emmy), PBS' Jane Eyre on Masterpiece Theatre, and NBC's The Office. ABC's Dancing With the Stars received the most nominations of any reality/competition series, with 8 (one more than Fox's American Idol), and tied with NBC's Heroes and NBC special Tony Bennett: An American Classic.
While it often takes years for new regularly scheduled series to be recognized, multiple nominations for ABC's Ugly Betty and Brothers & Sisters (including acting nods for Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths) and NBC's Heroes and 30 Rock means there is now room from the get-go for freshman product. More than half of the nominations in the top drama and comedy categories, in fact, went to performers and series that were either new or hadn't been nominated in the previous year.
Also of note were first time Emmy nominations ever for America Ferrera, Minnie Driver and Queen Latifah; return nominations for Patricia Arquette and Felicity Huffman (who were absent from the ballot after winning one year earlier); and nominations for this year's lead Academy Award winners - Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker. Mirren earned an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for Prime Suspect: The Final Act. Whitaker was nominated for guest actor in a drama series for NBC's E.R., one of three nominations for the veteran medical drama.
Since no announced Emmy Award nominations are complete without omissions, notably missing was major recognition for critical favorites Friday Night Lights on NBC and Showtime's Dexter, including Michael C. Hall, who was considered a shoo-in for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
