June 23, 2008 CBS Soaps In DepthGoing With The Flow Some actors prefer working on shows where there is a solid beginning, middle, and end. However, Y&R's Judith Chapman (Gloria) enjoys the open-ended feel of soap operas. "The beauty of soaps is you never know, just like life, what you will be thrown into next month," says the showbiz vet. "All of a sudden you can have somebody return from the past or somebody new come into your life, and it's like, 'Okay, let's go with it.' So for an actress, that's a dream." In fact, Chapman, who has tons of primetime shows to her credit, says that she prefers the surprises offered in daytime. "Even if you are a lead on one of the primetime shows, there is very little backstory, unless it's a soap opera. Look at all the CSI shows. They're wonderful--no question--but they're doing the same thing, the same forensics, over and over again," she offers. "They're making a ton of money, but if you like to act, then a soap or repertory theater is the best place to be."
