Hollywood comes CALLING
The day Kate Linder found out she was getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she was aboard a plane in Portland. Linder, who plays Esther Valentine on the CBS hit, the Young & the Restless, is also a United Airlines flight attendant.
“I was on a return trip. We had just completed the L.A. to Portland part and everyone was off the plane,” Linder explains. As she wasn’t supposed to be flying that day, she decided to check messages and call home. One message was from the late Johnny Grant, the former honourary Mayor of Hollywood.
“He said Kate, I’m just calling to tell you congratulations.’ I thought “What is he talking about?” She was confused, until she heard him say ‘Kate Linder, you are receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!’”
“Well I couldn’t breathe. I was so shocked and just started crying. “The captain saw all the commotion and asked what was going on so during the flight he announced it to the whole plane.
“It was an amazing day and I’ll never forget that,” she says.
She received her star in April, 2008.
Linder has also earned a star in the hearts of Vancouver charities. July 12, the L.A. native visited Vancouver to host her 10th annual fundraiser, An Afternoon Tea, which featured fellow members of the cast of Y&R, and this year, benefitted the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
“It’s really important to give back,” says Linder, who is extremely active in charitable giving. “And I can’t imagine there’s a family these days not affected by breast cancer in some way.” Her mother-in-law has breast cancer which makes it no surprise that Linder values her health and family above all else.
As for her role on Y&R, she said of all the precarious positions she’s been placed in as Esther, one scene always prompts a laugh.
“Considering I’ve never done it in real life...” Linder, a stepmother, said, “...I will never forget the day I gave birth on the stairs of the Chancellor residence. There was a storm, and it was late at night.
“Of course I was wearing the maid’s outfit, and the whole crew was around me. It was hilarious. I’ll never forget it,” she laughs.
On set, she’s tight with actor Jeanne Cooper who plays Katherine Chancellor on the show.
“We’ve been together 26 years. I just had my 26th anniversary, and she just won an Emmy.”
Dancing since she was a child, Linder is comfortable in a pair of tap shoes, and dreams of making it onto Dancing with the Stars one day.
“I would love to do the show. Do you have any pull?” she laughs again.
As for Vancouver, Linder is sold.
“I love Vancouver and the people. Vancouver reminds me of how San Francisco used to be...”
