Poor Ethan "Cane" Ashby. He's stuck in a bad marriage with Chloe, the woman he thought to be the mother of his child -- but might not be. Lily, the woman he loves, pines after him. And his mother, Jill, spurns him.
It's all a day in the life of actor Daniel Goddard as Cane on the TV soap opera "The Young and the Restless."
Well, his day job changed a bit last week.
Goddard was in Albuquerque both to scout locations for an unnamed indie film he's working on and to visit family. His wife is the niece of Gail and Nick Smerigan, the folks who brought Albuquerque Studios to town.
Goddard, though, is living the high life of a soap star.
He was recently named by TV Guide as the Sexiest Man in Daytime TV, and his relationship with true love Lily (Christel Khalil) on "Y&R" has earned the couple the Sexiest Couple award.
That's a big deal for a guy who came to American soap operas just 10 months ago.
But for the first time in several months, he had a chance to come to New Mexico and hang out.
"I love it down here. Every time I come down here to see Gayle and Nick, I love it," he said. "Here, you see the clouds, they have a 3-D thing to them. In L.A., you get a smog and it just lingers."
Goddard, an Australian, is an economics school dropout who decided to pursue acting. Though he's ubiquitous on "Y&R" these days -- sometimes with his shirt off showing his rippled muscles -- his face was already familiar to many in the States from his time on TV as Dar, the lead in the "Beastmaster" TV show.
Remember "Beastmaster," the show about a guy who communicates with animals telepathically?
"The funny thing was, you learn things about people. You learn quickly when you see a tiger, you can't go to a tiger with any doubts. If you want to pet it, you have to pet it with force; if you're reticent, it doesn't know what you're going to do. Apply that to people and you can lead everything with confidence," Goddard said.
Oh, and walking around for three years in a loincloth in the Australian outback certainly gives you some humility, he said.
He said we'll have to wait to see who the real father of Chloe's kid is. Will he and Lily get back together? Will he be entrusted with the family business, Jabot? Will he become the scion of the family, or a petty also ran?
"As long as you deliver the goods, they'll keep you around," Goddard said.
