Jack vows to destroy Victor this week when his arch nemesis sticks it to him (again) by giving Nick the cash to buy out Restless Style.
"It's just one more reason for Jack to want to bring Victor down," asserts Peter Bergman (Jack).
The mayhem at the magazine begins when Phyllis burst into the office with the news that Victor is alive. "Victor's return from the dead is juicy. Great stuff," says Bergman. "It begs for a great story in Restless Style."
Nick catches wind of the idea and is adamantly against it, insisting there's no way they're publishing such a piece. "Jack says, 'Are you kidding me? This is the hottest story to come down the pike in years.' " recounts Bergman, noting Nick and Jack "are right back to loggerheads. Two guys squaring off."
Sharon jokingly suggests Jack and Nick, who are both eager to end their business partnership, flip a coin to see who buys out whom. Nick and Jack take the idea seriously and decide to go for it.
"The coin toss isn't only about who gets to buy the magazine" notes Bergman. "It's about who gets to buy the magazine and for what price."
Jack wins the toss, "knowing full well that Nick can't afford [to buy him out]," explains Bergman. "He is overstretched, and since Victor has made such a public spectacle of cutting his family out of his life, Nick is not going to be able to rely on Dad. So Jack comes up with an astronomical amount. Jack knows there's no way Nick is going to be able to come up with the money, so Jack is ready to start celebrating."
Not so fast! The next day, Nick and Phyllis show up at the office and a cheery Nick seems anything but the meany. "Nick presents Jack with a check for the amount he set. Jack is stunned," relates Bergman.
Things only get worse when Nick shows Jack a letter from his father. "Victor has given Nick a bottomless line of credit to accomplish this [takeover]," notes Bergman. "Once again, Victor has stuck it to Jack good, and there's no way around it. Nothing can be done. Jack tucks his tail between his legs and gets ready to go. He feels awful about leaving the magazine. He just made a success of it. The last two issues sold out. This kills Jack. And the way it's done really bugs him, because it's Victor."
While Jack might be temporarily down, he definitely isn't out. In fact, he's bent on revenge.
"This is it. The gloves are off," vows Bergman. "Jack's attitude toward Victor is that he's won this round, but as for the larger war, Jack's got surprises coming."
One of them involves aligning with someone in Victor's own family to bring him down.
