September 29, 2008 CBS Soaps In Depth Point Of No Return It's no surprise that many fans have fond memories of FAMILY TIES and would love to see the cast do a reunion show. Yet Michael Gross (River), who played the Keaton clan's dad for eight years, doesn't believe they could ever top what was already done. "My feeling was--and I think it was the feeling of the producers, too--is that in so many ways it was a perfect moment," says the showbiz vet. "It's tough to go back to the old neighborhood." Even during the sitcom's successful reign, Gross admits he sometimes feared they wouldn't be able to keep up the high standard from year-to-year. "When I was told when we were renewed each year, I'd think, 'But we did it, and we did it well! How can we possibly do that again?' " he recalls with a chuckle. "I took it for granted what a hard act it would be to follow. Maybe this is hyperbole, but it would be like saying to Michelangelo, 'Could you make another David [sculpture]?' When something's done that special, it's hard to recapture it."
