Just in time for the holidays -- The Screen Actors Guild has decided to postpone the strike authorization vote until the national board can hold an emergency meeting on January 12.
The SAG had planned its strike authorization vote for January 2, but in the last few weeks, several celebrities such as Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Felicity Huffman, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, and Eva Longoria Parker have become very vocal about their opposition to a strike that would cripple the industry for the second time in the last year.
On the flip side, many high profile celebrities including Mel Gibson, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Ed Asner, Jerry O'Connell and Sandra Oh have signed "Statement of Support" for the SAG in favor of the strike.
Will the delay of the strike authorization vote allow the Golden Globes and Academy Awards to go on as planned? In light of current economy crisis, I can't imagine that 75% of the voting SAG membership would approve a strike.
Remember, out of the 120,000+ SAG members, probably about 10% are considered high profile actors (earning those big bucks!). The rest of the pack are struggling to make ends meet just like most of the country. A strike would be devastating to everyone from the actors to the make-up artists, camera crews and food service workers. Let's hope both sides can work things out and keep Hollywood working.
