Cupcakes, stars, and benefiting children—what better way to spend an afternoon than at an event that has all of them!
Celebrity Cupcakes for Charity was hosted by actor-director Scott L. Schwartz, who has appeared in many movies, including Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen, and directed the film Changing Hands.
Although Schwartz resembles a 6’10" teddy bear, he often plays tough guys in Hollywood. He put on the Cupcake event to spread the word about his Scott L. Schwartz Children’s Foundation, founded to lift the spirits of children with cancer.
Schwartz has been visiting hospitals for 12 years, since losing his sister to lung cancer in 1998.
Everywhere he films, he visits hospitals in the area providing toys, giant stuffed bears, laughter, and moments of happiness to children and their parents. He has also helped with many fundraisers for local hospitals.
In 2010, Schwartz decided to form the children's foundation to expand his humanitarian activities. Plans for the foundation include events for children of all ages, as well as plans to make a difference in the lives of every child in need by continuing to visit hospitals and host events to help raise money for various children’s charities worldwide.
Schwartz’s motivation for the Celebrity Cupcakes event was to let more people know about his foundation and its goals, and to garner support to expand its reach.
He explained his driving inspiration: “In this time when I see the world filled with suffering, I have to try to do something to help. To lighten things for the children, even if for a moment—it’s about responsibility.”
The atmosphere on the red carpet was friendly and jovial. Some stars arrived hugging bears; all came with something for the Marines’ “Toys for Tots” program. Schwartz greeted them and took dozens of photos with the celebrities and other event organizers.
The red carpet was only a brief stopping place, however. Everyone moved through with a bit of excitement as they headed for the cupcakes.
The gourmet cupcakes were petite in size and very special in taste. One particularly delicious flavor had icing topped with bacon, surprising the taste buds with a delightful blend of sweet and savory.
The star-studded crowd included Sean Kanan and Kate Linder from The Young and The Restless.
“I’m here because I believe in helping children as much as I can,” said Linder. “Ideally I would like everyone to have happy holidays.”
Linder quietly walked up to a young man in a wheelchair, who later said, “Ms. Linder approached me and asked if I had gotten any cupcakes. She volunteered to get some for me. I thanked her, and told her I’d had some cupcakes already. She paused to talk with me—she is very nice.
“Then before she left she gave me her card and told me to contact her and chat sometime.”
The Coast Anabelle Hotel in Burbank provided just the right setting for the event. The lovely environment and friendly atmosphere created by the hotel staff and the visitors all added to an enjoyable event.
We look forward to the rest of the cupcake event series!
