Dexter Renewed For Sixth Season
Finally, some good news on the TV home front -- Showtime has renewed their hit drama Dexter for a sixth season!
"Dexter is the best suspense drama on television," said David Nevins, President of Entertainment for Showtime. "To grow its audience so significantly in its fifth season is an enormous accomplishment by this amazing cast and crew. This is the easiest decision I've made since I got to Showtime."
During the course of the lifetime of a successful television drama, ratings are highest in the first few seasons before they begin to slide. Once a show begins to slide, the downfall can be slow and steady over several years (i.e. Desperate Housewives) or it can take a drastic plunge and never recover. Occasionally, a drama gets better with age and such is the case with Dexter, which has consistently gained in popularity over the years.
Why do the cable network shows perform better over time? Aside from having the freedom to create a show without much network interference, unlike the network dramas, which only air once a week, networks such as TNT, Showtime and HBO have the ability to air an episode multiple times during the week. As a bonus, when a series finishes for the season, these networks will spend months airing episodes from previous seasons, picking up brand new fans (or those looking to catch up) along the way.
Do you think network shows could benefit from airing multiple times during the week, especially during the off-season? .
