Apple Hit With Lawsuit Alleging iPhone and iPad Apps Send Users' Personal Info to Ad Networks
Apple is accused in a lawsuit filed Dec. 23 of allowing applications for iPhones and iPads to send users' personal information to advertising networks without the users' consent.
The complaint was filed in federal court in San Jose, Calif., and is seeking class action status. The suit says Apple's devices include identifying devices that allow advertising networks to track which apps users download, as well as how frequently and for how long they're used.
“Some apps are also selling additional information to ad networks, including users’ location, age, gender, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation and political views,” the suit claims.
It's filed on behalf of Jonathan Lalo of Los Angeles County and cites apps such as Pandora and the Weather Channel, which are named as defendants with Apple. The complaint says that Apple claims it reviews all apps sold through its App Store and doesn’t allow them to transmit user data without customer permission.
An Apple spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
