Hit: Y&R Raises Cane--And Phillip

Anything goes when it comes to Y&R's Katherine and Jill, so the latest twist is par for the course. Four years after learning they are mother and daughter, Jill discovered Katherine switched Phillip at birth. Which means the real Phillip is still alive--and now so is this spectacular rivalry.
The fireworks were immediate: Jill went for Katherine's throat when she found out what mommie dearest did in a drunken stupor. Phillip was always the root of their feud, so the twist was genius. Y&R needed something big to reignite the rivalry, so it tapped into years of animosity. Reviving this core character restores all the story potential that was lost when he died. And by introducing Cane, Y&R spared viewers another back-from-the-dead story (Katherine could have whisked Phillip away after the accident).
Another plus: The casting of Daniel Goddard as Cane. Whaddya know? The beefy bartender can act! So far, the charismatic actor has chemistry with everyone, especially new mom Jess Walton (Jill). Walton was terrific with Thom Bierdz (ex-Phillip), but now fans get to see a whole new mother-son relationship develop.
Of course, the biggest bonus is that Walton and Jeanne Cooper are front and center again. The powerhouse vets are making this rivalry as fresh and fun as it was two decades ago.
We'll drink to that--sparkling cider, of course.
