Hit: Y&R's Executive Decision
by MM
Y&R has taken Newman office politics to a whole new level with Jack running for office: the real political arena.
Jack's bid for state senate shook up NVP and the entire canvas. His plan for Clear Springs (great name!) has pitted major characters against each other. Since the new regime took over, Y&R has become less character-driven and much more plot-oriented. Instead of a reliquary or cochlear implant or porn site, everything here revolves around a coveted piece of land. But in this case we care about all the characters involved and there's something at stake: relationships. It's husband against wife, brother agianst sister, and ex against ex. Phyllis even blackmailed Brad into changing sides after learning he slept with Sharon. Talk about a land grab.
The campaign also adds a great new dynamic to the Jack/Victor rivalry. At first, Victor was setting up Jack, but now he actually agrees with Jack's plans for the land. Still, Y&R is obviously bulding to another inevitable showdown between the two men, so the suspense mounts as election day nears.
With his dashing good looks and charisma, Peter Bergman is the pefect "candidate" for this story. The show has carefully avoided the elephant in the room by not clarifying whether Jack is a Republican or Democrat, but Bergman seems to be channeling Bill Clinton. You buy what he's selling simply on the strength of that terrific smile.
All Jack needs now is a young intern....
