Joshua Morrow (Nick, Y&R) Has A Need For Speed
Who knew driving could be good exercise? This year, Joshua Morrow (Nick, Y&R) was invited for the third time to compete in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Pro/Celeb Race (he also participated in 1998 and 2000). He appreciates the opportunity it offers to earn money for the Racing For Kids charity, and finds driving over 100 miles per hour exhilarating. But he also enjoys the fitness challenges that racing provides.
"I work out regularly and play sports, so I'm in pretty good shape," notes Morrow, who at press time was undergoing intense training for the April 13-14 event. "But I'm tired after a day of driving. I'm exhausted! I lose weight doing it."
Driving a race car is "much different than driving on the street," he explains. "Though driving on [California Interstate] 405 is a race in itself [laughs]. At race school, they teach you how to drive a car as quickly and efficiently around the track as possible. I weng to Fast Lane, but there are schools all over the country. Some think, 'I'll just go fast,' but it takes much more than that. You're not really working your arms and your legs; what gets worked out is your core and back."
Morrow also relishes getting to meet some of Hollywood's biggest names. "[Star Wars Creator] George Lucas did the race with me my first year and again this year," he reports. "I had dinner with him and we talked about Star Wars for three hours. It was awesome."
Not all of his encounters have gone so well. "In my first race, I finished eighth," he sighs. "Cameron Diaz bumped me into a wall during my second lap and I coudln't catch up. My second year, I came in second because I couldn't catch up with Josh Brolin, who was very fast."
This year, he had his eye out for "[BMX star] Dave Mirra and [tennis pro] Martina Navratilova. She's a world-class athlete and a great driver. Me being the thingyy punk I am, I was like, 'No woman's gonna beat me,' but the first two days of training, she kicked my a** up and down the track [laughs]. It was unbelievable!"
