Golden Girls & Boys: The 2007 Emmy Nominees Give A Preshow Preview
Outstanding Lead Actress Nominees:
Jeanne Cooper (Katherine)
Given that this is your eighth nomination and you haven't yet won the Emmy, are you more anxious to win this year? "I'm kind of like the Meryl Streep of daytime [who had so many Oscar nominations]. Yes, I'd love to win, but it's more about going to the show and having a good time. I'm honored that my castmates chose me for the prenoms and then I was nominated."
Do you miss getting to go to New York for the broadcast? "Yes. There was always something magical about going to New York City and having the Emmys in Radio City Music Hall."
What aspect of the evening are you not looking forward to? "Wearing a formal evening gown and walking the red carpet in the middle of the afternoon. It's going to be really hot this year since they're doing it in June. It's difficult to feel glamorous when you're sweating bullets."
Do you have any nightmares, like tripping as you go up on the stage? "No. If I do trip, I'll just ask for five gorgeous men to help me up [laughs]."
Michelle Stafford (Phyllis)
Are you ladies going to do the traditional Lead Actress lunch this year? "Yes. I've already made the reservations. The other three gals are from New York and then it's me and Jeanne, so I told her I'd take care of it."
Do you and Jeanne joke about being each other's competition? "We don't like 'competition'--we never mention that word. We think it's great that we're both nominated."
Any Emmy-related nightmares of falling? "No. My roots are from the South, where we come out of the womb wearing heels [laughs]. Heels are like... come on now. We ladies know how to wear them."
If you do win a third Emmy, where will you put it? "I don't know. The other two are in my office."
Will be you be attending any after-parties? "Yes, I'm looking forward to that. That's the fun of it. I was actually thinking of having an after-after party at my house. The late-late party. But I'm nervous that too many people will come and I'll be arrested. That would be an interesting way to end the evening."
Outstanding Lead Actor Nominees
Peter Bergman (Jack)
Do you have any Emmy-related nightmares, like tripping onstage? "No. The great benefit of having gone up there a few times already is that I can actually imagine it now without peril. I know I can make it up the stairs, anyway."
Do you have any Emmy night good-luck charms? "I've worn the same bow tie for a lot of years. I know styles have changed, so I'm probably a bit backward, but I wear the same black tie each Emmy night."
Have you and Christian [J. Le Blanc] joked about being in the same category? "We're just happy to have company and to have each other there. I like him and I like his work... and I want to beat him [laughs]!"
Have you practiced making a "gracious face" in case you lost and the camera pans to you? "No. Again, had I never won one of these, I'd be on the edge of my seat. Since I've won, it's eay to be really generous. I've had these and I've lost some, too. Any of these guys are terrific actors and deserve to win an Emmy."
Christian J. Le Blanc (Michael)
Leading up to Emmy night, have you joked around with fellow nominee Peter Bergman? "Peter and I have joked that we're going to get together with the other [Lead Actor] nominees and get a table right across from the [Lead Actress nominees] and we're going to text message them all through lunch. We'll harass them with, 'Hey, girls! Don't you think you should be watching what you're eating? Are you gonna drag that behind you at the Emmys?' "
Have you prepared a speech? "I'm just going to start wtih nothing and see what happens. Who knows, I might come off like Shakespeare. I would be very shocked if I won this year. It's a tough, tough category. I'm in there with some heavy hitters. But I can just brag that I've been nominated, right up until they call out that da** name. Until then, I'll be saying, 'You know I'm a nominee' on the red carpet."
Has anything ever gone wrong for you on Emmy night? "One year, we may have snuck something into the Emmy Awards and maybe some of it spilled under Camryn's [Grimes, ex-Cassie] seat, when she was a very young girl at the time. So Cammie smelled like a brewery. We just kept turning to each other and said, 'Oh, my God, she's crocked to the gills! Welcome to young Hollywood!' "
Outstanding Supporting Actor Nominees
Greg Rikaart (Kevin)
Who helped you pick your Emmy reel? "I know some people like to have a slew of people watch their tapes, but in my experience, that only confuses me. Initially, I knew the tape I wanted to pick. My manager talked me out of it, so after I decided against it, at the last minute I went with what my instinct told me was right. I did watch some tapes with Tracey [E. Bregman, Lauren] and with Michelle [Stafford], but I ended up picking the tapes that felt right for me."
Which scenes are you submitting? "My primary tape is the episode where Mackenzie leaves and Kevin rather simply tells her, thanks her for being such an integral part of his life and his rehabilitation. The scenes are really understated and subtle. The second tape was where Kevin confronts Tom's ghost. I just remember feeling really proud about those episodes."
Are you going to party afterward? "At least a little bit. Win or lose, it's always nice to have a drink!"
If you don't win, who would you like to see bring home the gold? "I'd have to say Kristoff. Keep it in the family. I'm sure the other guys had some great stuff, but I'm familiar with his work, I know how solid an actor he is and it would be nice for Team Y&R."
Kristoff St. John (Neil)
How do you feel about your work this past year? "This has been one of my hardest-working years since joining Y&R. I worked around the clock. Plus, it was a stressful year because I was going through a divorce, so I had my own soap opera to deal with."
Do you have any good-luck charms like special underwear? "No, I go commando, baby! There's nothing special I do, but traditionally I don't write a speech because the first time I won [in 1992 for Outstanding Younger Actor], I didn't have a speech and just thought of something on the fly. Since then I've considered it bad luck to have anything prepared."
Who do you consider your stiffest competition? "I have to say we're all each other's rivals, but just because I worked with him before, I'd have to say Rick Hearst. He won a couple of years and he won when we were both in the same category [Outstanding Younger Actor, 1991]. I have to say Trent Dawson is so funny and great, too. If Greg wins, I'll tell him, 'Watch your back.' "
Outstanding Younger Actor Nominee
Bryton McClure (Devon)
Any Emmy-related nightmares? "Probably about leaving out the name of someone important in my acceptance speech or getting up there and being so overwhelmed I won't know what to say at all. Guys don't have to worry so much about tripping on their heels [laughs]. We're lucky in that respect."
Have any previous Emmy winners advised you on how to make a good speech? "Kristoff, Christian and Michelle all gave me good advice: to have a plan about what you're going to say because you only have so much time to speak when you're up there. I'll definitely be prepared."
Have you practiced making a "gracious face" in case you lose? "It'll probaby be the same face I made last year!"
Who do you think is your biggest competition? "Tom Pelphrey. He did some amazing work and he won the Emmy last year. But all of the guys in my category are talented actors."
