Ever since Y&R's Cane called up his Uncle Langley to pat himself on the back for getting a job at Chancellor and having Katherine in the palm of his hand, the Internet has been ripe with speculation that the hunky Aussie may not exactly be who he appears to be. Is he really Jill's son... or a clever con artist? Daniel Goddard (Cane) spills.
"For me, Cane's moral core is a righteous moral core, and any manipulation going on may have stemmed from experiences that make him feel certain things need to be mended," reasons Goddard. "But what's coming up is interesting. Everybody knows that Amber is pulling the wool over Cane's eyes, but is he really the one pulling the wool over her eyes? Is there a double-cross here? The twist that gets paid off is actually a better twist than when you saw him make that phone call."
And that may mean there is definitely more to the character than the easy-going charm that viewers see. "Cane is a very smart man," Goddard muses. "He's a survivalist. I also think that he is a good person. But sometimes good people are put in situations where they have to make decisions that aren't so good."
"Cane can sometimes be ruled by emotion," he continues. "He's very cognizant of the fact that he was given away, and I think that can scar somebody. The actions he takes along the way of trying to figure out how to deal with [his abandonment issues] may be a long process with an interesting end."
While Cane grapples with that, though, there is a little question over what he might do should he find out that his so-called wife has been lying to him to get her hooks into the Chancellor fortune. No matter what happens, Goddard believes that his alter ego really does love Amber. "I think he never had somebody to look at him and say, 'You're special to me; I love you.' He gets that from Amber."
But will that be enough if--or when--her deceptions are revealed? "I don't think that's going to be something that sits well with him," Goddard admits, grinning.
