How close to the wire did negotiations come? I was ready to leave and had made up my mind that was going to happen. I was gone. We'd both drawn our lines in the sand and I was making other plans. Then Ed Scott (producer) stepped in and talked to me. Then my wife talked to me. We got back into the [negotiation] dance and worked it out. In the past, it went back and forth, but this was the first time negotiations got weird. That's part of the changing landscape in daytime. They were ready to let me go. It was tough to take. I'm glad we worked it out.
Were you concerned they planned to kill off Nick? I didn't want them to do it. It didn't feel right, whether someone else was going to play it or I was. I don't know how you can kill him. You can get some other guy in here who's probably a much better actor [than I am] to do it, but it would be a big mistake. Then after we worked it out, they told me about the break. I was like, fantastic! I should have thought of this before.
What did you do with those five weeks of unplanned vacation? I traveled. I took my oldest son, Cooper, back to Oklahoma. It was just the two of us. I introduced him to his grandpa and my buddies. It was a dude trip. It was fun. I also went to Mexico, up to my wife's parents' house, and we went to Arizona to hang out with friends. We were on the circuit. It was awesome. I hadn't had that much time off in 13 years. I did everything: golfed, wakeboarded, played paddle tennis and swam. It was the best five weeks of my life.
Did you watch your co-stars play out Nick's death? I saw the funeral scenes. They just turned it on. I don't know if I could do that. In all honesty, I'd just left them a couple days before, saying, "See you in five weeks." The people I've gotten to work with the last 13 years are all amazing actors and they've raised the bar. They're pros. They've taught me everything I know. You try not to drop the ball when you're around them. I had total faith in their abilities, but at the end of the day, I was still very impressed.
Do Nick's crash injuries mean extended time in the makeup chair? I'm wearing lots of cool makeup! Five years ago, I wouldn't have had the patience to sit there, but having children has made me patient in all walks of life.
Should we trust Nick's helpful heroine, Logan, who is nursing him back to health? I'm not at liberty to say (laughs).
Spotlight On Joshua Morrow
Joshua Morrow (Nick) made lemonade when contract talks with Y&R went sour.
