May 1, 2007 CBS Soaps In Depth
David Lago's (ex-Raul) slew of new films range from thought-provoking to downright scary!
David Lago was only 19 when he began playing Y&R's Raul Guittierez. "The character was a blank canvas," Lago recalls. Although disappointed that he was written off the show in 2004, the actor wound up with a Daytime Emmy and an exciting independent film career.
Touring the festivals is Artistic License, the award-winning short in which he struts his stuff with surprising comic flair (see www.identificationfilms.com). "I play an eccentric guy who takes driver's license photos at the DMV. To him, it's the most important job because he takes the picture that is who you claim to be for your entire life. He gets really creative with backdrops, beach balls and using different themes to bring out the person's inner beauty," Lago grins. "There's talk about making it into a television show or a full-length feature."
Goin' Dark
Also touring is Dead In The Water, an indie about a Los Angeles club promoter who throws a party on a yacht, which turns out to be haunted by the late wife of the captain. "I play a hothead who sneaks onto the boat. He's got it in for the club promoter and ends up causing a lot of trouble," Lago explains of the gruesome flick. "When people start dying off, they wonder if it's a killer or my character? Or is it the ghost?!?"
Lago goes to more dark places in The Wind And The Long Black Scarf, a movie that takes a disturbing look at a complicated love triangle. "It's about a girl who has to choose between two guys that are complete opposites. My character doesn't have a lot of money and he's rough around the edges, but he's charming and a real sweetheart," Lago offers. "The other guy is well-dressed, has a career and a kid... you know, a wine-drinking kind of guy." When the woman talks both men into moving in with her until she makes up her mind, the romance takes an interesting turn. "There are deaths involved and... it's an interesting tale," Lago hints.
Plays Well With Others
Coming soon is The Essence Of Depp, a movie that delves into the world of "as similars" (actors who impersonate celebrities) and follows a man (played by Stacy Souther) who often portrays Johnny Depp. "My character is Richard Grieco's as similar, Thad Luckinbill (J.T.) is Kiefer Sutherland's, Christian Le Blanc (Michael) is the Robert Downey Jr., character, and John Enos (ex-Bobby) plays himself!" Lago chuckles. "The 'essence' comes in where whatever the celebrity is going through at that particular time, we actually go through ourselves. We kind of feel for them. It's a comedy, but it does get dark, because these people take it very seriously." Check out www.myspace.com/davidslago for trailers of most of Lago's movies.
Recently, the performer fulfilled another dream by starting his own company, Lago Films. "I just produced [and starred in] my first short film, Obsidere. It's the most dramatic piece I've ever done," he enthuses of the flick that first screens this month. "And I'm also in preproduction for The Sad Poet, a film that I wrote and will direct and act in." Already scheduled to appear in five more indie films this year, Lago isn't likely to return to daytime soon. "I wouldn't come back just to be on a show and have a job," he insists. "[However], I would like to do it if I could play opposite somebody that I truly admired and felt I could learn from. Someone like GH's Maurice Benard (Sonny)."
