July 5, 2007 Soap Opera Digest Insider Tales from the Interview I always enjoy chatting with Judith Chapman (Gloria, Y&R), who never fails to make me laugh. The last time we spoke (for a news story that will appear in an upcoming issue) was at the very end of my work day, and she was concerned that she'd kept me waiting. However, when I informed her that I was actually heading to a karaoke party right after, she became very excited. "Ooh, that sounds like so much fun!" she cooed. "I love singing!" She then went on to ask if I'm a good singer (No!), but was impressed by my willingness to embarrass myself in front of friends — after all, she did sing on the show herself ("And was scared to death, but ended up having fun," she recalled). I explained that since my real talent is playing flute, I don't mind showing off my not-so-great singing skills. Turns out we have that in common, too, since Chapman dabbled in flute in college. "It's a beautiful instrument," she praised, then went on to joke, "Were you ever like the Pied Piper, leading children around town?" "Well," I replied. "I actually did dress up as him once for Halloween when I was in junior high." Surprised by my answer, she paused for a minute; she then burst out laughing. "That's great," she told me, then wished me a great evening. "You really should make a tape of yourself singing," she suggested. "You never know what might happen with that." Um, not likely — but I appreciate her supporting a fellow performer!
