August 2, 2007 Soap Opera Digest Insider: Greetings From the Editor by Lynn Leahey Dear Readers, There's been a lot of talk lately about a Redbook cover of country music star Faith Hill that had major retouching. The magazine removed wrinkles, eliminated some back fat, made one arm much thinner and even added an arm, which couldn't be seen in the original shot. At Digest, we often retouch photos too, though not to that degree (and never to Y&R's Eric Braeden, who doesn't want his photos changed at all). The idea is not to make actors look different, just make them look their best. That can mean eliminating flyaway hair or a blemish, or soften lines if the lighting is harsh. We don't want stars to look phony, we want them to look the way they do on TV. Which is why we experimented with Joshua Morrow (Nick, Y&R) on this week's cover of Digest. The photo we used is beautiful (hard to take a bad shot of those actors), but Morrow had a beard when the shoot took place, which he's since shaved. Wondering if we could make him look more like he does on screen right now, clean shaven, our art director tried "shaving" him digitally. You won't see the results, because as we discovered — and maybe Redbook has, too — some things are best left just the way they are. Look for a gorgeous cover shot on your new Digest.
