When Y&R's Michael pleaded his mother's case to the DA, Christian Le Blanc's one-sided confrontation with the paralyzed William was a stroke of genius.
Michael was able to joke about his stroke-ridden stepfather's penmanship one moment, then gently sthingy-feed him the next as part of his plan to keep the troublesome Gloria out of a federal pen.
Le Blanc started casually, chuckling over William's plight, but his eyes darted nervously when he confessed that William was actually a dream father. Embarrassed, Michael took a deep swig of booze. Le Blanc lost his shyness and laughed when William grunted at the compliment. Michael quoted Shakespeare about "men of honor" and toasted William with another shot of liquid courage before dejectedly revealing he'd never known an honorable man, including himself. Le Blanc underscored that threat with a fearsome dark look.
Shifting gears, Michael talked about the men who influenced him and brother Kevin. Even as Michael scoffed at the melodrama of the tale, Le Blanc's eyes were glassy with heartache and guilt. Taking another numbing mouthful, Le Blanc studied William's face as Michael insisted they both recognized his mother's inner beauty. William admitted he loved Gloria, but Michael's fury emerged. Le Blanc shook the wheelchair as he listed the various charges Will could bring against Gloria.
Then his eyes moistened again. He delicately fixed Will's collar and offered a settlement... until finding that "Help" note William had hidden earlier. Le Blanc sighed and rubbed his eyes before launching Michael into a tantrum that landed William back in the hospital, burying Gloria's secret forever.
The jury is still out on whether Michael's judgment is any better than his mother's, but there's no question Le Blanc made his case with a winning performance.
