She's already been found guilty, but this week Y&R's Phyllis learns that her troubles are far from over. A health crisis for Summer, the possibility of losing Nick forever and the little matter of what sentence she'll receive weigh heavily on the blackmailing vixen. Will she lose everything and be forced to say farewell to Genoa City forever?
Gone...And Forgotten?
Already, Phyllis has been put in the excruciating position of being forced to watch her memory-challenged hubby slip further away from her as he tries to rekindle the past he remembers with Sharon. However, Y&R's co-headwriter, Scott Hamner, says that Phyllis knows that as long as she's around, she still has a chance to keep Nick by recreating that passionate spark that drew them together in the first place.
"Over the last week, Nick has seen the parts in Phyllis that made him fall in love with her in the first place, and so they have grown cmeany," he shares. "And as they've grown cmeany, she's started to feel more hopeful. But right at the point where she feels the most hope that they could get back together, she's going to be parted from him. And her greatest fear is that time away from him will give Sharon the opportunity to come back into his life."
While her relationship with Nick certainly consumes Phyllis' thoughts during this time, her portrayer, Michelle Stafford, says that her children are her alter ego's top priority. "She wants to stay out of jail because she doesn't want to lose her life or her children," reasons the Emmy winner. "It's really more about her children for her than it is her being in love with Nick. And that's how it would be in real life, I would think. The least of your worries would be if your husband loves you. You'd be thinking about your kids mainly."
Final Attraction
In fact, when Summer falls ill with a fever, her concerned mom spends the night rocking her and fussing over her daughter, realizing that moments like this will be taken away from her once she goes to prison. However, as he watches the mother and child bonding, Nick finds his own heart--which he thought belonged only to Sharon--softening. After she puts her sleeping baby down, Phyllis is caught off guard when Nick sweeps her into his arms for a quiet dance around their house.
Even though the romantic gesture sends Phyllis' heart fluttering, Stafford says her on-screen persona's emotions veer more toward a gloomy regret than romance. "She's very sad. She thinks she's going to go down. It's very sad."
Indeed, as Phyllis watches her freedom shrink down to days and then to hours, Hamner suggests fans might be smart to stock up on tissue boxes. "She's trying to spend time with her children and make the most of it," says the scribe. "It's going to be intensely emotional. The bond between Phyllis and her family looks like it's going to be broken, and being parted from Nick, Daniel, and Summer is going to be very poignant and at times heartbreaking."
One Against The World
Making matters worse is that Phyllis feels that she's in this battle virtually alone. "Nobody is really in her corner except for Daniel, Michael and Lauren, and Nick is coming around at the end," Stafford says. "But she's just fighting for her life. This is a story about Phyllis in the fight of her life. Everybody is so against Phyllis. I'm trying not to go into the pity realm. I'm trying to still play her strong so not everybody hates her, but it's been very challenging to play."
As prison looms in front of her, the flame-haired stunner does some serious soul-searching. "She's trying to spend this time with her children, but yes, she's also reflecting on all the people that she's injured," Hamner reveals. "She regrets many of the things that she's done, particularly in the last few months. So this is a very reflective time for her that is filled with a lot of remorse."
One person she certainly regrets hurting is Jack. When she bumps into him in the waning hours of her freedom, she apologizes to him for her part in their failed relationship--and offers him a warning that with her out of the picture, Sharon may find herself back in Nick's arms. "She's warning Jack really for both of their sakes," says Hamner. "She certainly knows that if she tells him this he will keep an eye on things when she's locked up. If she's not around, she totally wants Jack to be watching and aware so if he sees something developing [between the former spouses], he could step in."
At the same time, however, Phyllis makes a shocking decision--asking Nick for a divorce should she be sentenced to any length of time in the big house! "It's a very selfless gesture that she makes," Hamner teases. "It has nothing to do with how she feels about him. She's crazy in love with him. She loves and respects him, so she's willing to make this noble gesture."
But noble gestures are cold comfort, considering what may be coming ahead. Certainly, prison has a way of changing a person. Will Phyllis lose her very soul along with her freedom? "Phyllis is always going to be feisty. The experience of prison could definitely impact her, but it wouldn't make her into a different character," insists the wordsmith.
Jail doors ominously clanging shut sound like the end... but in this instance, it may actually symbolize the start of something else for Phyllis. In fact, Hamner teases that viewers might want to invest in some shock absorbers along with those tissue boxes. "There is a secret that Phyllis will learn... that nobody's going to see coming!"
