January 7, 2008 CBS Soaps In Depth
This week on Y&R, Nikki would be wise to take a motion-sickness pill, because her life is about to take some dizzying turns! In fact, when lover David makes it clear that he wants to officially replace current hubby Victor--as in being the Mr. to her Mrs.--the blonde stunner must delve into her heart to figure out her future. Will her decision be the right one... or cost her more than she ever bargained for?
Hostile Territory
As the week begins, Nikki spends a touching Christmas Eve in the hospital's intensive care unit, watching over her premature grandson with David and her would-be son-in-law J.T. Yet their heart-warming moment is disrupted by the arrival of her own estranged hubby. While Victor's mood is surprisingly jovial at first, it quickly turns dark when Nikki reminds him that he's about to get clobbered with multiple lawsuits regarding the Clear Springs disaster, and he taunts her about losing both her business and all her money.
Alas, it is this kind of intense rancor between the once fairy-tale couple that has Nikki continuing to seek solace in David's arms says her portrayer, Melody Thomas Scott. "Victor seems to have turned a corner that he's never approached before. He almost seems more comfortable being hostile and volatile," she muses. "As kind-spirited as he became last year with the epilepsy, he is now mean-spirited and basically emotionally and verbally abusive. Nikki knows that she doesn't have to put up with this, but she also knows that it's a fine line that she must maintain to keep access to Victoria."
Good-Bye, Victor?
Unfortunately, their relationship becomes even more strained when Victor is finally slapped with the lawsuit that Nikki has promised. As Nikki and David discuss their pending legal action at her new digs, the tackhouse, the Mustache storms in to confront her. Ye the days of Nikki folding like a lawn chair in the face of her powerful spouse's rage are gone, and she fearlessly goes toe to toe with the mogul, refusing to withdraw the lawsuit unless he reconsiders calling in her loan.
Not surprisingly, Victor isn't about to back down or declare a truce. After he leaves in a huff, Nikki breathes a sigh of relief, which quickly turns into a gasp of disbelief when David takes that moment to pop the question!
Scott says that even though her alter ego cares for David, Nikki is still stunned by the marriage proposal. After all, her relationship with David began as "definitely a rebound [from Victor]," the actress insists. "All of Nikki's husbands are! But David stands out from the crowd because he treats her so well--certainly when compared to the Victor she knows these days. By treating Nikki so badly, Victor is unwittingly pushing her into another man's arms."
Does that mean Nikki will be flipping through bridal books in the near future? Not necessarily, Scott cautions. "I think her mind is too clouded with Victoria, and now this lawsuit against Victor, to even begin to think about marrying anyone... And of course, there is that pesky detail that she and Victor are still legally married," the showbiz vet laughs. Still, Scott suggests that Nikki's hesitancy to walk down the aisle may not be a reflection of her feelings for David as much as it is a measure of her growth as a strong, independent woman. "In the old days, Nikki would have married him way before now!"
Decision Time!
Indeed, rather than leap forward with a resounding yes to David's proposal, Nikki consults with Katherine, who urges that her pal follow her heart. Yet Victor and Nikki fans may be shocked as to exactly where that may lead her... namely straight back to David! Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Nikki, Victor opens up another front in their battle by hiring J.T. to dig up whatever dirt he can on the mysterious Mr. Chow.
While Nikki did promise to love Victor in good times and bad, these bad times may be just a bit too awful for anyone to handle! "Every aspect of her life is in shambles. Her husband has become a holy terror, her daughter isn't laughing at her jokes, Miguel hasn't been seen in months, and thanks to that da** Zapato, she's down to her last 100 pair of Blahniks! To top things off, her roommate is Sharon," jokes Scott. "Would you be happy?"
If Victor wants to hold onto any hope of salvaging his beyond-troubled marriage, the time to act is now. Will he reach out to his estranged wife before it's too late?
