January 21, 2008 CBS Soaps In Depth
Y&R's Judith Chapman (Gloria) sets the stage for an evening of dramatic intrigue--all for the sake of helping the world's needy!
The actress has assembled an all-star cast of daytime performers to do a one-night reading of The Trial Of The Catonsville 9 at the Palm Canyon Theater in Palm Springs, CA. on Saturday, January 19. Aside from organizing the benefit event, Chapman is also directing and reading a role in the play, which tells the story of a group of clergy and lay people who protested against America's involvement in Vietnam in 1968. "The play is not so much about politics as it is human decency," she notes.
The performance will benefit KIVA, an organization that allows loan donors to sponsor aspiring entrepreneurs' businesses--and empower them to lift themselves out of poverty. It was after seeing a staged reading of the play performed by Tim Robbins' ensemble, The Actors' Gang, that Chapman decided to spearhead a daytime version for charity. "I was so profoundly moved by the play, the message and the commitment of the actors involved," she says. "I decided then and there to put together my own production using the best of the best of daytime."
Christian Jules Le Blanc (Michael, Y&R), one of the event's performers, says that he has nothing but admiration for his TV mom. "People talk about producing a play, but she's gotten the theater and the cast. She's directing it. I've produced before, and I'd rather put a nail in my eye!"
In addition to Chapman and Le Blanc, the reading's cast includes Michelle Stafford (Phyllis), Greg Rikaart (Kevin), Kristoff St. John (Neil), Vincent Irizarry (David), Emily O'Brien (Jana), Daniel Goddard (Cane), Eyal Podell (Adrian), Ron Hale (Mike, GH) and John Callahan (ex-Edmund, AMC).
Attendees will be treated to a catered reception with the cast after the performance. Tickets are $60. For more information, contact the Palm Canyon Theater at (760)323-5123.
