January 29, 2008 Soap Opera Weekly
Y&R's Nikki Newman is now officially rich, fabulous--and single. But, as her portrayer Melody Thomas Scott would agree, she'd better watch her back around her new beau.
Weekly: What lessons did Nikki learn from her horrible year?
Scott: I would hope she eventually learns it's always better to end one relationship before starting another. She'll never be able to right that wrong, and it gives Victor a nice, juicy bone to hang onto forever. Even though Victor has been guilty of that countless times, it would have been better for him to not be able to throw that in her face.
Weekly: How has Nikki kept fans on her side, even after cheating on Victor?
Scott: Nikki has always had the support of viewers, even during the most idiotic behaviors! As frustrating as she can be, men love her vulnerability. Her weaknesses are shared by many who can be honest with themselves. People continue to root for her in spite of her seeming inability to learn from past mistakes. I think a popular belief is, "If only I got the chance, I could straighten her out!" There are a lot of rescuers out there.
Weekly: What has it been like to play Nikki's more ruthless side since she started asking, "What would Victor do?"
Scott: I don't think she looks at it that way. She simply wants to feel more in charge of her life. She's had a very ruthless example by her side for a lot of years. He has been her only guidepost since she was very young. I also think she can be prone to acting out impulsively and then tends to forget, or remembers it in a different light. Perhaps we're all a bit guilty of that. Selective memory....
Weekly: What would you like to see for Nikki now that she's a divorcée again?
Scott: It would be fun to see her become involved with a man who is equally as powerful as Victor. Perhaps even an acquaintance of Victor's. I don't think Victor looks at David as a substantial competitor for Nikki's heart, so he can just brush him aside like a fly. It would be interesting to see him truly threatened by a man he already has admiration for. I don't know who that would be. Maybe a brand-new character who sweeps in out of the blue?
Weekly: What would you say if you could give Victor a piece of your mind?
Scott: Stop revealing your insecurities. Get a shrink!
Weekly: Is there anything Victor could do to get Nikki back?
Scott: Funny. I would think of it as the reverse. The answer remains to be seen.
