February 18, 2008 CBS Soaps In Depth
It was just months after exiting her role of Y&R's Mackenzie that Rachel Kimsey and her beloved Harley-Davidson Sportster were in a horrific accident. "I got run over by a teenager and shattered my leg," she reveals. "They had to put plates and pins in to put it back together."
In pain, Kimsey moved home to Utah in late 2006. "It took months for us to realize that I broke my tibia and my fibula--I was basically walking on a broken leg for about a year," she confides. "I was on crutches for four months and in a cast for another month after that." Unable to accept a job doing stunt work for the Spider-Man 3 movie, Kimsey was thrilled when she was instead invited to lend her voice to the video game. "I played the character of Betty Brant and a reporter and a couple other things," she confides. "I thought, 'If I can't walk and I can't stand, at least I can do voices!' "
Three months of a painful bone-growth protocol led the actress to be ready for a final operation last summer. "I was scheduled for surgery on the same morning that I was called to go do an episode of NBC's HEROES," she recalls. "I picked HEROES!" Playing shape-shifter Michelle (aka Candice) in the October 2007 episode was a blast, but just being able to work again was thrilling. "That was awesome!" recalls the athletic actress. "I talked them into letting me do some of my own stunts--I broke 12 coffee cups on the back of my head!"
Soon after, Kimsey landed an October guest spot on CBS' MOONLIGHT. "I got to work with the star, Alex O'Loughlin, who was really sweet," she recalls. "I was the damsel in distress who gets [murdered], and he spent the rest of the episode looking after my ex-husband who killed me and was released from prison." Being back on the CBS lot felt like coming home to the Y&R alumna, who would have liked to stick around for a second episode. "I have to tell you: I worked on a vampire show and died, but I did not get killed by a vampire, nor did I get turned into a vampire. So really, my feelings are kind of hurt," she giggles. "I'm going to have to go back!"
After finally completing her surgery, Kimsey was thrilled to be feeling more like her old self and eagerly accepted a role in the upcoming film Daylight Fade. Shot in Memphis, the film gave Kimsey a chance to stretch as a performer. "I am sort of the mother vampire, and a man who I have changed spends his time fighting his evil impulses and trying to do good to make up for the fact that he has to survive by killing people," she hints. "I was excited about getting to play a bad guy for a change."
Might Kimsey someday bring her good-girl character back to Y&R? "I would definitely come back," she says. But for now, this performer is taking things one day at a time. "I'm walking, and I'm looking forward to dancing again someday."
