June 17, 2008 Soap Opera Digest
In the 5/6 issue of Digest, Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla) spoke about the casting call that went out for a "Drucilla double," noting that, "I know as much as the public does about what they're doing." Rowell stated that she's open to a return, but so far, "No one has invited me to come back." Here, Rowell's longtime co-star, Kristoff St. John (Neil) weighs in.
"The hype about Drucilla coming back, I believe is just that at this time," theorizes St. John. "I know Victoria has announced that she would like to return to the canvas and be a part of the show yet again, but I don't believe there is a storyline in the very near future for her return."
The actor adds that he's hoping the character is indeed resurrected at some point. "I'm not saying that it's not going to happen this year--that's up to the writers, CBS, [Head Writer] Maria Arena Bell, Sony, Barbara Bloom [senior vice president, Daytime] and ultimately, Victoria Rowell herself," he notes. "It would not surprise me if her character did reappear, wet [and wearing] braids like Malcolm had when he was played by Shemar Moore. [That was] when he came back from the raging waters [in 2004]. Drucilla would be very angry at the fact that Neil has moved on and is in love with another woman. That would be dynamite story. As an actor, I would love to play that. We all know that out of drama, trauma and strife comes some of the better storylines."
As for the possibility of recasting, St. John has this to say: "When I went through [selecting] tapes during the whole Emmy process, I only concentrated on January through June, when Victoria left. And that's a true testament to her work and her skills as an actress. I truly thought my best work was with her. She brings it out of me and, I think, vice versa. It was very sad to see her go. Neil lost his wife and I lost my screen partner."
The actor admits he's remaining optimistic. "We know characters who have the opportunity to return are never decapitated or lose their lives in car crashes," he chuckles. "They're always in a body of water, much like the Malcolm story when he was lost in Africa. They can come back."
